Michael is a full-time gardener living near Shaftesbury in Dorset. His first childhood memory is of watching seals in Lossiemouth harbour in the northeast of Scotland where he lived his first few years and then later building dens in the woodland ferns of a village in southern Hampshire. Michael is married with three children and three delightfully mischievous grand-daughters. He has worked outdoors as a gardener, come rain or shine, all his life and probably always will. He takes notes whilst he works on a voice recorder and so he writes with ‘the wind in his hair and the good earth under his fingernails’.

I have been reading your notes and looking at the photos which are lovely.
I’m glad you’re doing so much for us in the garden.I liked your comments about the moles, and the ones about the robin imitating a tit.
This is a beautiful blog – so delightfully laid out and the photographs and thoughts are lovely. Thank you – a moment of peace to come visit.
Dear Michael, I was hooked at the first picture. Then the writing seduced me completely. On days like this, when I’m traveling and can’t get out into my own garden, it’s a real treat to visit yours. Thanks. Grace

If you would care to check out http://www.marianboswall.blogspot.com she has photographs of Great Maytham Hall where FH Burnett wrote the ‘Secret Garden’. Hi Michael,
Great blog you’ve got here. I have a publishing idea I’d like to run past you – do you have an email address to which I can send a proposal?
Thanks,
Julia
Hi Julia
My e-mail is thepapayatree@aol.com look forward to hearing from you
Using a voice recorder. There’s a good idea. Though knowing me I might leave it outside in the rain as I have done in the past with a radio and a camera. The radio stopped working but the camera struggled on for a while…
Hope you manage to get your technology sorted out soon. your photos are stunning.
Hello Janet, yes the voice recorder on my mobile phone is great…i just make observations whilst I work that i would never think of back at home…and i keep it in my pocket!
